About SHEA

A framework built for her.

SHEA is a Community Interest Company that exists because the systems around work were not designed with women in mind. Safety. Health. Equity. Access. Four pillars, one framework, built by women with lived experience, for the women who come next.

We support women to identify the barriers that keep them out of, or under supported inside, the world of work. We do this through direct programmes for women and by holding a mirror up to the workplaces they enter.

SHEA Works is our first programme. A twelve week pilot cohort designed around the whole woman, her story, and what she needs to move forward with confidence.

What we stand for

Four pillars.
One framework.
Built for her.

Every pillar of SHEA addresses a real, documented barrier that women face in the world of work.

S

Safety

Women cannot bring their full selves to work when they do not feel safe. Domestic abuse, harassment, and trauma do not stay at the door. A safe workplace is not a nice to have. It is a prerequisite.

1 in 4women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. 57% say it affected their ability to go to work. ONS Crime Survey for England and Wales, 2023
72%of survivors of domestic abuse reported that their abuser harassed them at work. SafeLives, 2019
Only 5%of UK workplaces have a domestic abuse policy in place. CIPD, 2022
H

Health

Women's health is still treated as a niche concern in most workplaces. Perimenopause, menopause, menstrual and gynaecological conditions, mental health, and the load of holding everything together are invisible in HR frameworks built on a different body and a different life.

13 millionwomen in the UK are currently perimenopausal or menopausal. Nearly 900,000 have left jobs due to symptoms. BUPA / Wellbeing of Women, 2023
1 in 10women has endometriosis. Average diagnosis time: 8 years. Endometriosis UK, 2023
60%of women say their workplace is not trauma informed. Mind, 2022
E

Equity

Equal pay legislation has existed for over fifty years. The gender pay gap persists. Equity is not just about pay. It is about the psychological contract that expects women to do more emotional labour, more mentoring, more proof of competence.

14.3%gender pay gap across all UK employees in 2023. ONS, 2023
2x more likelywomen are more likely than men to face pregnancy and maternity discrimination at work. Equality and Human Rights Commission, 2022
Only 8%of FTSE 100 CEOs are women. Cranfield Female FTSE Board Report, 2023
A

Access

For women with lived experience of the care system, criminal justice, domestic abuse, homelessness, or long term caring responsibilities, the door to work is often locked from the inside. Mainstream employment support was not built for her.

51%of women leaving prison are unemployed one year after release. Ministry of Justice, 2022
1.7 millionwomen in the UK are economically inactive due to caring responsibilities. ONS Labour Market Overview, 2023
58%of care leavers are not in education, employment or training by age 19. Department for Education, 2023

The founder

About Nicola

Nicola, founder of SHEA CIC

Nicola · Founder of SHEA

“To be nothing more is to be more than enough.”

My name is Nicola. I built NMH Collective, and SHEA sits within it. On my own personal development journey I came up with a phrase that changed everything for me. Nothing More, Her. Because to be nothing more is to be more than enough.

I do not have to keep going above and beyond. I do not have to walk into a workplace and put on a mask. I am enough. And it took years of healing to know that. I am a survivor of domestic violence. A survivor of the criminal justice system. A survivor of raising a child outside of a healthy relationship. I am a survivor, and I overcome.

While I was building my career I wore that mask every day. I became so uncomfortable with everything I was asked to be, reading somebody else's playbook. And while I was reading those staff handbooks and policies, helping to build cultures for other people, I realised something. There is no safe, healthy, equitable and accessible place for women like me.

So now I hold organisations accountable. I teach them, show them, train them, audit them. And I work with women like me, women carrying limiting beliefs, so we can push through together. So they know how to show up authentically, with those barriers finally removed.

SHEA was built for every woman who has ever had to hide something at work. I was her.

The heart of SHEA Works

Our programme

SHEA Works

Where she comes first.

SHEA Works is a 12 week pilot programme built around the whole woman. Her safety, her health, her rights, and her potential. Because you cannot help someone into work without first helping her feel safe enough to try.

Twelve women. Twelve weeks. One to one coaching, group cohort learning, therapeutic support from week one, and a community of women who get it.

A circle of women joyfully together, representing the SHEA Works cohort community

One to one coaching

A named work coach from week one. Six personalised sessions covering CV and personal narrative, interview preparation, disclosure support, and goal setting.

Group cohort programme

Twelve weeks of structured group learning with a small cohort of women. Identity, values, workplace rights, financial foundations, self employment.

Therapy and wellbeing

Access to a dedicated wellbeing practitioner throughout the programme. Trauma informed practice from week one to graduation.

Practical support

Childcare contribution on programme days, travel support, breakfast and lunch on every programme day, and a peer community that outlasts the cohort.

Who SHEA Works is for

All women facing barriers to work are welcome. We particularly focus on reaching women who have been failed by or excluded from mainstream employment support.

Women with lived experience of the criminal justice system
Women who have experienced domestic abuse or gender based violence
Care leavers entering work for the first time
Women returning after caring responsibilities
Women managing long term health conditions
Women who want to build something of their own

The team & work with us

The women behind SHEA Works.

SHEA Works is delivered by a team of experienced women who bring lived and learned experience to every part of the programme. We are intergenerational, from 27 to 60 plus, with careers that run from some of the most prestigious places to work, through to businesses we built ourselves.

A vast range of insight

Between us we hold decades of experience across prestigious organisations, entrepreneurship and the communities we serve. That breadth is what keeps the coaching practical and honest.

Trained where it counts

Every coach has a background in therapeutic care, NLP, coaching or building a business, so the support you receive is emotionally literate and grounded in how work really operates.

A coach to match your life

Mother, married, single, of faith, heterosexual, LGBT, carer, survivor. Wherever you are in life, there is a woman on this team who has been there too.

Survivors and overcomers

We are all survivors and all overcomers. We take a very human approach to aligning you with work and removing the mental and belief barriers standing in the way.
